Easy hard surface normal details

So for this tip, I thought I share something cool about normal details. I don’t think this is a ground breaking technique or anything that will ‘blow your mind’, BUT! it is very easy and very powerful to create your own hard surface details for vents, wholes, panels, etc.

Easy hard surface normal details

The setup is simple:

  1. Create a plane in ZBrush on a square document (size will determine the resolution of your map 1024, 2048, etc).
  2. Add a couple of objects to the plane, they can be inserted or as separate subtools, it doesn’t matter, and choose the ‘NormalRGBMat’… DONE!

You can now export the document form ZBrush and you’ll  have some very nice and clean normal details based on the objects you setup in ZBrush… Just think about the possibilities: Maybe using some Booleans:

You can also do tileable panels or use the IMM brushes that come with ZBrush for some quick and easy details using Radial Symmetry:

The cool thing is that this are generic Normal map details so you can use them in any other software that you want. My preference would be Substance 3D Painter since that is my tool of choice for texturing but they work perfectly fine in Blender and other software:

Extra Tip: To explore cool details and effects with this techniques you can play around with Array Mesh to create intricate patterns from simple geometry objects ;)
