In this quick tutorial, I’ll walk you through the process sculpting a beard on a stylized character in ZBrush using custom hair brushes. The technique is very simple but really powerful as it lets you create sculpted details (like the hair on a character) that can later be baked into a texture like a normal map.

Using the brushes for hair…
As I mentioned in the tutorial, you can use the same brushes and the same technique to create hair or fur in your characters. It is not just a technique to create beards specifically. Here is a quick timelapse of the hair brush in action:

3 Sculpting hair brushes
You can download the 3 custom hair brushes in a ‘bundle’ so they come in a ZIP file that you need to uncompress. If you just want to get just one of the brushes or download them separately, you can grab them from the Resources page. The brushes were created with the 2020.1.1 version of ZBrush. If you haven’t updated you ZBrush version to 2020.1.1 or above, the brushes won’t work correctly.
