Tweaking the filters

I thought it would be relevant to show you how easy is to modify one of the filters that come with the pack. The idea is to take something like the Graphite_Pencil_Sketch filter which gives you a thick noisy line and turn it into a cleaner sharper outline… Kind of like updating the look of a 6B pencil into a 3H grade:

Tweaking the filters

The settings for this render effect use all of the 12 available filters in the BPR Filters palette. You can simply turn them off one by one to see the contribution of each filter and tweak the intensity and blending modes of each. But this is what you get once you load the Graphite_Pencil_Sketch:

To keep it simple, turn off all filters after F4. Most of the filters from F5 to F12 are subtle enhancements of the line and additional distortion. With only the first 4 filters you get a much cleaner linework:

Now, the cool thing is to tweak some of the filters. For instance, you can take the F4 which is an Outline Cavity filter, and change the settings a bit. From the modifiers of the filter, disable the Exterior Cavity, reduce the Cavity Radius from 3 to 2 and play with the Cavity Falloff and Sensitivity slider so create a thinner sharper line:

To add a bit of texture and keep the look quite sketchy, enable F5, F6 and F7 and from the F7 (the Texture Overlay filter), click on the texture thumbnail and update it with another tileable texture (I used graphite pencil hatch1.png included with the pack bonuses):

Finally, enable the rest of the filters which are mostly to shaper and re-define the sketch and change the F8 filter type to be a Displacement filter. Make sure the Front colour is set to white (for more contrast), and play with the displaced amount and the Opacity, I set these to 70 and 68 respectively:

That’s it. With some minor tweaks, you can take 1 filter and very easily create 10 sub-filters based on it, and in the pack, you have 24 to choose from as a ‘starting point. Hope this helps!

NOTE: I know this tip is 100% related to the filters that come with the pack, so if you don’t want to get the filters, don’t worry… I wouldn’t let you hang haha. I put together a video tutorial to show you how to build your own blue pencil sketch filter from scratch. Here’s the link.
